John McRae’s 20 year long career has seen him participate in the development of mainframe computers to the operation of one of the 25 largest web sites in the world. His flexibility and ability to learn the needs of customers has allowed him to thrive in such diverse industries as Electronic Design Automation, Internet Development, Financial Services and Video Post-Production.
While the Director of Technology at realtor.com McRae, with his experience in web site development, object-oriented programming, client-server systems, database design and a broad understanding of infrastructure hardware and network environments guided the site through a period of 1300% growth. Realtor.com shows McRae understands the development and operation of n-tier systems facilitating the optimal user utilization of Terabytes of integrated text, image, virtual walk through and streaming media.
At Investment Technology Group, McRae developed & maintained various equity trading strategy severs – the company’s second most profitable set of products. In addition he filled the role of Database Administrator and created, maintained and extended the equity research application’s RDBMS repository of 5 years of equity trading history to load international equity markets’ daily activity.
At Broadcorp Productions, McRae served as a post-production engineer for both training films and TV commercials.
While Director of Engineering at Enlighten Inc., McRae managed all phases of the web site development cycle to the on-time delivery of Sony Television’s “Dawson’s Creek” interactive website. He also provided the architecture and engineering management for an update to the “Uncle Ben’s Rice” website.
McRae acted as Chief Engineer for PeopleLink—the very first idealab! startup company, where he oversaw the development of one of the Internet’s original Instant Messaging systems.
In his entry to the Internet business in 1995, McRae served as Senior Multimedia Engineer at AND Interactive. There he worked on a diversity of projects including adding a database driven feature to “email your congressional representative” to MTV’s original “Rock the Vote” website. He was also the lead engineer on a project working with Microsoft staff to create a website showcasing JScript and other features of the Beta release of Internet Explorer 3.
Prior to entering the Internet field, McRae spent 12 years developing and maintaining complex information management systems for the Electronic Design Automation industry. There is a good chance that the design of the computer you are looking right now was facilitated with software developed by the teams McRae worked with.
John McRae is a patent holder and holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.
