View from Ground Zero

By Step Jones, October 31, 2004

My wife and I were in New York last week.  One of the things we made room for in our schedule was to go to Ground Zero.  This was an experience that I am sure we will never forget.

We took a cab from where we were staying, at the Waldorf-Astoria, and weaved through the New York traffic.  When we got to Ground Zero, the City was in full hustle, traffic was unbelievable, and the City streets were jam packed with people.

At Ground Zero there were throngs of people looking into that eerie space that once was the Twin Towers.  You could feel the patriotism in the streets.  You could feel the resolve, and pride to be an American.

We spotted many foreign tourists, who came to witness an atrocity by evil and they came to revel in the American spirit.  This inspired me to know so many from the world appreciate the great American dream.

One of the first things that we noticed was how little damage there was to the surrounding area.  In our minds we expected a much greater damage area.  And how much of life had returned to the area!  We certainly were humbled by a great the American spirit that was there and could be felt in the air.  No, there is no place like America. There is a spirit that pervades in every spark of the minds that live in this great country.  We are very proud to be Americans, and no matter what shortcomings we may have, we have something very special.

As Marina and I said our prayers for everyone there and in America, I couldn’t describe the proud feeling that we had for America, and the sadness we could feel around us.

The next night Bin Laden came to America by TV.  The terrorist claimed responsibility for the destruction of the World Trade Center, and told us Americans that we were responsible for the terrorist acts.  We were blocking freedom in Islamic territories, and we had to be brought to justice.  I am paraphrasing, but this I think was the bottom line.  And he suggested that President Bush was to blame for his actions.  I know that he was involved in terror before the President, and I am sure he will try to be responsible for terror after the President.

I think if “Din Laden” could have produced more terror acts in the United States these last three years he would have, but I think he is a coward that hides in the mountains, lives in caves, and has no conscience, and very little in the way of ethics or morality, whatever those two words mean to you.

His followers are of poor achievement and very life deficient in this world, and would like to have their will imposed on others.  Do you think they would know freedom if it bit them on the ass?  I am sure they would not like it.

What will “Din Laden’s” legacy be?  One that most Americans would reject as anything other than a poor imitation of Hitler.  One of weak leadership, fanatical thinking that would do harm on the non-believers.  And who are the non-believers these people who would lead?

These crazy people would impose their ideas on as many people as possible, to make sure there was no freedom, no personal choice: “Believe as I do or die.”

What can this sad, lunatic man do other than be able to collect a gang of thugs to do damage to innocent people around the world?

Certainly this thug wouldn’t know justice, truth, kindness or many of the other wonderful characteristics of the American people.

What kind of dictatorship would this madman set up if he were ruler of any people or citizens?

Why do people turn to be as hateful and vile as this terrorist?

Do they not understand the ability we as people have to change the world?  That for all of our wrongs, Americans overwhelmingly are good and decent?  We are tolerant of other religions, social groups, and we Americans are growing everyday. We should be proud of this accomplishment in our lives.

Americans have built a system that anyone can achieve in, be educated in, and be free in.  Is this what “Din Laden” is so afraid of, the sprit that we can affect the world with.

When there is freedom, tyrants and dictators can no longer have their way in societies.

You see America is coming to the world with idealism, freedom and the ability to have personal achievement.  And many can’t stand that because then they won’t be able to exercise their will over the populace.  The fate for their society is one of death and destruction, which is what they would do to millions of innocents in the society that they ruled.

In the end the rule of the one is never the right choice.  The people must contribute to society and bring freedom and choice for all to share.

America is unique, and free countries around the world are unique, and freedom is growing, and flourishing like never before.

We saw that at “Ground Zero.” Do the right thing, and not the convenient thing.  Explore your value beliefs and see what might be good and bad for your relationships in life. My goal is to help thousands of people achieve their dreams and increase their happiness. Especially yours.
