Fortunately for Chen, the lions had just been fed, so only one lion attacked, biting his arm and clawing Chen’s trousers before the zoo officials were able to drive the lions away with water hoses. The police arrived and shot the lions with tranquilizer darts and they were able to go in to get Chen out.
An anonymous doctor was quoted as saying 46-year-old Chen had psychological problems. Did they need a doctor’s opinion for that or could this one have been mailed in from the cheap seats?
Now I don’t know if Success Philosophy would have helped in this case, but this does serve as a rather extreme example of why it’s important to develop all the areas we’ve defined in the Four Dynamics in order to get a balance and proper foundation in our lives. For example:
Attitude/Risk:
Chen certainly did have a developed attitude, and with his attitude he was willing to take risk.
Choice/Change:
He also had the Choice and Change model down pretty good; he made a choice to make a change in the lion’s religion. He missed on getting a proper understanding of the lion’s ability to comprehend organized religion.
Self-Image/Mental Model:
Chen’s self-image was clear to him, and his mental model of the world was definitely one that was his own.
Eliminate failure, and increase success by developing character, values, and goals:
Well, if he can get these down, Chen will be back.
For the great majority Success Philosophy guides us to make reasonable and rational judgments about who we are, what we want to be, and finally how to get there.
In Success Philosophy it doesn’t make any difference what religion, political, or social ideas that you have. We talk about you, and how to make the world around you a better place to live. We give you concrete ideas on how you can be happier and more successful in life.
What is the picture that you have in your mind? How do you see yourself? Do you tell yourself that you are good enough? Do you believe it is up to you to save the world (or the lions)?
It is not up to you to save the world by yourself. How would you (or Chen) think it could be done by just one person?
It isn’t even up to you to change other people; you have a difficult enough time just changing yourself into what you want.
If you change yourself, however, you can change the people around you. Each incremental change you make for yourself makes a difference to everyone you interact with.
Chen wanted to change the lions. Obviously this is an impossible task. Why did Chen think he could change the lions? Why did he think the lions even need changing?
Chen needs to focus on changing Chen, and we need to focus on changing us. If enough of us change ourselves while focusing on making ourselves better, do we not change the world into a better place? What if we all took control of our lives and controlled the changes that happen, instead of letting someone telling us how to change. What would the impact be?
Do you want to be happy and live a better life? Change what goes on inside your head. Develop yourself, and let the lions develop themselves.
That’s the toughest thing: Changing ourselves, while letting other change themselves.
If you want to make a bigger impact on the world, work on your change and let everyone else work on his or her own.
