What is leadership? In a nutshell, leadership is confidence and trust.
You need to have confidence in the people around you. Allowing them to “do their own thing.” Give them some ideas, goals and values, and something that you want to accomplish. Then let them run.
You need to give people the resources and let them design their plans to accomplish what they have been instructed to do. You can help them develop these ideas, and then you can't micromanage. If you are going to micromanage, why not just do the job yourself? However, the mind of the one individual is limited in scope; it has to be by definition, as opposed to the mastermind of the many.
Leaders are often afraid, even terrified, by the prospect of giving someone a goal and then letting them run with it. These are not real leaders. You can’t do it all.
When someone makes a mistake, that is what it is: a mistake. Mistakes are not usually fatal, if they are honest mistakes. People can pull together to correct a mistake. What is not correctable is when the business is so off course that it can't be fixed because the one who rules does all of the thinking, and doesn't trust others.
Yup, trust and confidence. And when it is your money and your capital that is on the line, it is tough to let people do a job that you hired them to do.
And when you finally become that manager, and you have the levers of power in front of you, it is easy to want to pull them and keep all the control to yourself.
That, as a manager, is ultimate doom.
