My son asked me what I do for a living yesterday, and I told him I try to help other people be better at what they are doing, and so I talk to people. He said, “Daddy can I do that? I want to be in your business.”
Ok, it is not all I do, but it is probably the most important thing I do. And I don’t want to do it all the time, even though people expect me to.
Sometimes I would just like to lie down and take a little nap- you know what I mean.
So I ducked out quickly from the radio show yesterday, got home and took a little nap. And then spent some time with my son.
I am teaching him how to be a leader by learning to be kind, telling the truth and helping others become better at what they do- knowing that none of us are perfect, or God-like, but just human beings that have relationships with other human beings. And as leaders, leading by caring and by example, rather than finding the position that allows someone the lever of power that they pull to see what they can make someone do.
It is easy to armchair quarterback, but we must move past the mistakes and go forward with how can we do something that will make us all stronger.
I remember my father saying that if it doesn’t kill you, it makes you stronger.
I am not sure I want to go that far. Rather, I ask how can I help someone be better? Sometimes it just takes some encouragement, or saying thank you, or putting your heads together to create the next level that you want to go to.
So now my son is tired of all of this talk and he no longer wants to be like daddy, but a rock ’n roll star.
Well, so much for my effectiveness in communicating leadership with my son. How are you doing?
