In today’s world, it seems that quite a few people are looking for something that will make their lives complete. Perhaps at no time in the world have so many decided that the unexamined life, as Socrates mentioned, is so important as it is today.
We want fulfilling careers and home lives; we want good relationships with everyone around us that we care for. We want our heads and bodies in the game of life.
We want to overcome any blocks that we have in life, and achieve more. We want personal development and growth in our lives. We don’t want to go home and feel like we have not accomplished anything worthwhile.
And we are spending a lot of time and money doing it. I pulled up over 7,800,000 “life coaches” on the Internet! Wow! And all seem to charge at least $500.00 a month or more for 4 weekly telephone calls a month that last 30 minutes or so. Some of the coaches charge thousands of dollars a month. Wow again.
When I say that there has never been a time like this when we want more out of our lives, I don’t think I am kidding. And this is great! Maybe as a society and world we are changing for the better inwardly, and we know we want more from life.
Perhaps there has been a revolution in how we want to live our lives. And this is good.
Perhaps with inner peace we can find outer peace and create more harmony in the world.
I know this is a far flung idea, with suicide bombers, war, and despots all roaming the globe, but it gives me hope that people want to be productive and useful, and not the other way around.
I think people are searching for peace in themselves, and by searching for peace in themselves, they seek peace for others around the world.
I read an invocation to a large crowd this week from the Chinese philosopher Lao-Tse that goes like this:
If there is to be peace in the world,
There must be peace in the nations.
If there is to be peace in the nations,
There must be peace in the cities.
If there is to be peace in the cities,
There must be peace between neighbors.
If there is to be peace between neighbors,
There must be peace in the home.
If there is to be peace in the home,
There must be peace in the heart.
If we start with ourselves and work our way up there is the possibility of peace in the world, and everyone could be a life coach.
