What is a self-image and how do we get it? We get our self-image from two sources:
- the outside world
- ourselves
First, let’s talk about ourselves. We talk to ourselves all of the time - 24/7 in fact - and as we tell ourselves that we are good and bad, we do good things and bad things. We tell ourselves we should act one way or another and our sub-conscious mind records all of this and then like the great computer we are, we act out who we tell ourselves we are going to be.
And where do we get this self-talk from? The people who tell us what and who we are. This is the second source of our self-image: the outside world.
Ever have someone tell you good or bad things about yourself? What does this do to your self-talk?
What if a teacher, boss, or someone else in authority tells you something good or bad about yourself? How much impact does that have on your self-talk?
Try this when you find yourself noticing that you are talking to yourself about what may be a shortcoming in your life: Turn that self-talk around and tell yourself how you are going to do better and be stronger.
Don’t be your own worst enemy. Talk to yourself in the positive. Tell yourself how you are going to be better. It will make a difference in how you act and feel about yourself.
