Truth, Advertising, and Success Philosophy

You have to love this. From the front page of the LA Times Business section: “Regulators sue diet-pill vendors.” It seems the commercials that we have been seeing are not the truth. Lydia B. Parnes, acting director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection stated that assertions by CortiSlim, “fly in the face of reality.”  And the company’s partner product, CortiStress, claimed to prevent or cut the risk of a wide range of ailments, including obesity, cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease. The company also used infomercials labeled as “breakthrough” shows. The attorney for the company claimed, “over-enthusiasm” by his clients for their claims about this stuff.

I have to tell you I’ve seen the commercials and they are very good. They had me on the brink of ordering this stuff and I know better. And the part I like the best, is that the commercial says this is not for people who are only 5 or 10 pounds overweight, don’t order it, it is too powerful for you. Shucks, I was all over that, give me two bottles!

The attorney then stated, and I have to quote this one because you wouldn’t believe me, but the attorney was actually quoted as saying, “This was a company very excited about a new product in an area where they didn’t have vast amounts of experience.”

The commercials also state that elevated levels of cortisal, a hormone released under stress, was the underlying cause of weight gain. Glad it wasn’t that bagel with cream cheese I just stuffed into my mouth.

OK, I did a small amount of research into cortisal, and it apparently is a hormone, but we don’t know a lot about it scientifically, it appears to me. But to put your mind to rest, it does exist. It does have something to do with our stress levels, and no I couldn’t find any independent research that says it makes you fat or thin.

But my favorite of all commercials now on the air is the Enzyte ads. If you haven’t seen these you are missing out on the best. These commercials hawk male enlargement. You know the commercial that talks about “working with wood,” “Bob has a whole new attitude,” and “the garden hose is at full capacity,” and “no little cocktail wieners allowed.”

As a matter of fact there are a lot of supplements that claim to be able to give a man more of what he needs in certain areas (you many have noticed a few hundred emails about this in your spam folder). I was astounded. There is even a web site that does comparisons for people that want to know more about the various products, with the slogan, “more bling—bling for your ding—ding.”

Honest. I can’t make this stuff up. Do you believe it?

I mean seriously, we get sucked into this advertising and we know deep down underneath that it probably isn’t true. The magic pill isn’t the magic pill. The fountain of youth is still hidden.

As a kid one of my favorite movies was Robin Hood, with Errol Flynn. I loved that movie. It was about good and bad. Choice, and change. Attitude and risk. Self-image and what the world should be. It was about values, wisdom, and virtues. There were no magic pills, no easy answers. All they had was honor and valor. That is a tough sell today, since we have so much that comes to us like it is the truth but is not. And all of this so people can make money without a real product, or real work attached to the product.

At Life Motivations we think that there still is a place for the real stuff. It is not easy, but it is doable. And America gives us the platforms where any of us can make it happen.

At Life Motivations we measure success by the accomplishment of something that is important to you. And if there was some way to measure that definition of success, how successful would Americans be compared to the rest of the world?

I guess allowing this medicine man into our homes and living rooms is one of the ways we have made America great. But my Great-Great Grandfather wasn’t fooled by the medicine man that pulled up in the covered wagon; I guess we should have learned by now.

We know you can do it, and it is all upstairs in your mind, not a hormone in your body for most of us. We hope that we can help you keep success in your mind and not give up or give in. It does not have anything to do with hormones. We think, blink, blink.
